This post is long overdue and probably going to be multiple parts. I wanted to actually establish this once and for all and fortunately I was able to find some good resources that flesh out everything:

Tanga

Thin straps that connect the front and back (personal favorite)

 

Classic

Fabric instead of straps, no panty line. Versatile stylings

G-string

More strappy and less fabric (not my fave, though obviously sexy)

Bikini style

Similar to tanga style. strap connection. vibrant design, made for swimming
